Hobie 16: Onboard video

By James Wierzbowski: I am the skipper, my crew is Pip Pietromonaco, we’re both 19 years of age. We train 4-5 times a week and have sailed together for 10 months now but long time 16 sailors.

We finished 3rd youth at the 2010 world championships in China and are travelling to every hobie regatta in Australia this year and will do the South Pacific Championships in Fiji training for the 2011 nationals. Totally commited to our campaign with money being the only barrier at the moment and eagerly awaiting the selection of the 2016 olympic catamaran.

Hobie 16 is the WORST boat ever designed. WHY are people still sailing this POS>

Clearly you don´t know much about cats… +100.000 H16 sold, quite good for a 30 years old design, conceived to be a full on beachcat.

Large racing fleets all around maybe one reason?

McDonalds has sold a lot of hamburgers, but that that doesn't make them good either. The Hobie 16 has discouraged more sailors from switching to multihulls than any other single factor.

    Good video, James & Pip!
For all the miles on its odometer, the Hobie 16 is still the best class for mixed cat sailing, and crews without potbellies!

I think the hobie 16 is one of the best overall cat, for all time.

OH yes, I have sailed in F18 and Tornado, incredrible boats and much better confort than HC16, but in long distance races whit rating the hc 16 win. Tri to put a F18 whitout spi vs hc 16 in downind. I'm not trying to say that the hc 16 is faster, only that he is very good in all conditions.

A POS boat, for one, does not last over time. The Hobie 16 is a very durable boat over time. There are lots of old ones still sailing.
A POS boat does not hold up in rough conditions. I've sailed a 16 in over 40 knots (yes, OVER 40 knots), and it held up just fine.
A POS boat is unreliable. The 16, as small cats go, is very reliable. We sail them 250 offshore miles a year, over the course of 5 days. see https://www.hobiechallenge.ph/12/
In short, the 16 is great value for money, it has a great set of one design rules, and a very strong class association, and lots of people think so. That's why there are so many of them. That's why people sail them.
You probably think the Optimist is a POS boat too. You are entitled to your own opinion. 🙂
