Formula 16 Australian Nats 2024 held at Club…. The Australian Formula 16 had their 2024 Nats at Two Fold Bay Yacht Club.
F16s now with full bore DS main sails (they had a period where they were banned or luff length restricted).

Also another great aspect of the F16 is that their are racing fully convertible foiling platforms to highest podiums spots. Emma Rankin & Beau White sailed the Viper ‘Convertible’ Edition, which can race floating mode no prob and also you can equipe the platform with a good set of Z foils and T rudders.

This concept we proposed for the F18 didn’t caught up in the end but is working well in the F16, this special Goodall Viper F16 has two dagger cases though, the F18s like the production convertible F18 Infusion Mk3 had 1 only one case which brings some issues on the water held inside a bigger case to be able to load a Z foil dagger.

But the Goodalls have that drawback sorted out and they offer production convertible F16s that can win in floating mode and go for a foiling ride any given day. Which is an excellent platform investment for those wanting to do both programs.

Add to above you can race an F16 double up or single handed legally 1 to 1 within Formula 16 Class races.

Australian F16 Nats 2024 Regatta info by Beau White:

“Goodall Viper F16 convertible won and 3rd was also a convertible!! All boats use decksweeper. mainsails Youngest skipper was 11 Lewis Abbott, oldest was Rob Saunders at 63. Very diverse class, mixed teams 1,2. Entries half were solo unfortunately 2 did not make it to the event. However what was very important was how much the solo category has grown.

We also ran the Goodall Design Formula Cup where the F18s sailed in a combined fleet with the F16s this had yardstick and handicap results.

We do this to assist with numbers at the regatta and there are F18 teams that enjoy the combined fleet and style of the F16 event”.

Beau White on the Foiling Convertible Viper equipment:

” All the convertible Vipers in Australia are raced in displacement mode too. At the Australian National titles 2023 the convertible Vipers came in 1 and 2 and 1st & 3rd in this 2024 regatta.

Although the convertible Viper can use the foiling rudder cassettes and blades for displacement because there is the possibility to remove the wing and change it for a little bullet. We prefer to change the rudders for Viper displacement type rudders.

This way the boat is 100% a Viper.
The convertible Viper in displacement mode comes in at 140kgs with Alu mast.

Interesting development has been the use of venturies on the foil cases. When we use venturies there is no need to seal the case and the cases empty at around 3 knots of boat speed.

Also, the foiling gudgeons and the standard rudder gudgeons were designed that they use the same hole positions in the transoms. So changing between them is simple and you don’t need to seal holes.

Additionally the foiling Viper has rudder rake and differential control with most of the system housed in the rear beam.”
