The Cat Classic 2021 a great success!

The Hobie Class Association of Western Australia run another fun Catamaran Classic Regatta at the Nedlands Yacht Club, on the Swan River Perth.

With over thirty entries and Cats of all sizes the results are calculated on yardstick. All the competitors start on the one start line with the “big boats” at the pin end, and the rest at the starboard, boat end of the start line. All the boats race the same course.

This year Day 1 saw a delay for wind before a blustery 20 knot westerly blew in. With gusty conditions but mostly flat water the conditions would likely suit the Hobie 16’s. However not to be with Brett Burvill and Max Puttman (Edge/ Ng) leading the fleet on the F18, closely followed by Gavin Colby and Kai Colman (eXploder/Brewin) also on F18.

Day 2 saw the breeze shift to the south and soften to 10 knots. The shifty conditions gave the other classes a chance to shine with the Nacra 14 square of Rob Smith showing some awesome pace to drag the Hobie 16 fleet. Only to be denied the win when Colby/Colman won race 5 by over 5 minutes to Burvill and the other F18’s. This meant the race eventually timed out with all the Smaller boats recording a DNF. That’s yacht racing!

The event was won by Burvill/Puttman who were very quick in the windy conditions breaking Colby/Colman’s 4 year in a row winning streak! Third was a Hobie 16, Darren Smith/ Kirsten Houk.
