F18 Italian Nats 2020: Title for Vettori & Stella

2020 F18 Italian Nats held at Dervio, Lake Como. Another Title for Christian Vettori & Mauricio Stella (Scorpion/1D) who already were crowned Italian Champs in 2017 & 2018. It was a close fight as Alessandro Pelliccia reports below, second overall for Mazzuchi & Ligsinoli (C2/Oxo) and 3rd for Bob & Marc Baier (Scorpion/1D).

2020 F18 Italian National Championships, report sent by Alessandro Pelliccia

Three intensive days of racing with all the scheduled races done, regatta held by the Centro Vela Dervio for the Italian Formula 18 Catamaran Championship. Long weekend at Lake Como which saw 24 F18 catamarans racing from 4 to 6 September.
They were three days of hard fights for the title, reaching race 9, four crews were on the list for the first place, whoever would have won the last race would have been the also the overall winner.

Three days with a “Breva” wind always punctual at 14.00hs between 8 and 14 knots. Lighter at the start and getting stronger as you went down south. Sides of the course never taken for granted, and a race course to be interpreted from time to time.

The rain of the last few days provided unstable winds that makes everything closer to “traditional” sailing, where the difference is not only speed. At the end of the three days the Title went to to the experiennced Gardesani crew of Vettori-Stella, second to one point Mazzucchi-Lisignoli, yet another point for the third place with Matteo and Andrea Viganò (in the race standings, out of the championship the Germans Bob and Marc will be third. Baier), fourths Ugo “Highlander” Ferrari with the historic bowman Edward Canepa at the bow, and to close the podium Fantasia-Recalcati.

Once again the F18s proved to be a vehicle with the right mix that it takes to make a thrilling regatta: speed, technique, strategy, tactics and a lot of passion so as to attract several new crews and young talent!
