Formula Foil Worlds 2020: Day 3

Third day of the event and second day of racing for the Formula Foil Worlds 2020 being held at Silvaplana, Switzerland. All photos above: Vanora Engadinwind by Dakine 2020 / Sailing Energy. Complete gallery here.

Another excellent day of racing with 5 Finals. We saw Live the first 3 races of the day where Nico Goyard sailing a full Phantom Package was dominating at will, playing another game.

Later in the 4F Nico finally was surpassed by Pierre Mortefon (Loke Foil / Fanatic and Duotone Sail) who stands 2nd overall.

Four bullets for Nico Goyard, add 4 in the Qualys.

Third overall for our new idol here in Arg, Przemyslaw ‘Pont’ Miarrczynski. Been following his Formula foil campaign since Jakub told me he was racing an Exploder Foil. Pont finished 4th last year at the 2019 Formula Foil Worlds, and early this short season he won a local Polish event with flare and bullets.

I asked Jakub why he wasn’t racing PWA, and he pointed me out Pont’s background which I didn’t knew, a former RSX Bronze medalist in 2012. Pont is racing a standard Exploder foil , and super standard Starboard Formula 177, a proven Severne HGO 10M and another standard RSX NPryde boom. Nothing fancy, equipment any Formula sailor can get or has.

What is fancy is the way this 40yrs old Master is holding the pace vs Top PWA & Olympics Young Guns in their prime. Also equal mention to Julien Bontemps (Neiplryde / JP / Neiplryde) at +40yrs old.

Past weeks I sent Pont’s cv to a local good friend, telling him this guy was going to be a Dark Horse and here we are. Gonzalo Costa Hoevel, (First PWA Foil Champ & and head of IQFOIL Olympic area for Starboard) commented on his career on RSX and his usual constancy at every Regatta, showing that mode at Silvaplana too. Pont is also the IQFoil Polish coach. IQfol Europeans will be held after this Formula Foil Worlds at same venue.

The Live Stream was good + Live gps Tracking, but the full package was Gonza Costa Hoevel providing super detailed insights on the French Armada techniques and many other subjects, it was the best Regatta commentary I’ve seen, of course the guy knows what he is talking about, and his wide open comments were a pleasure to hear along the excellent action on the water.

Massive Regatta, and great success for the Formula Foil concept.

See equipment list below, a typical working Formula Class view, with several different equipments being able to provide you a top ten finish. with 6 different Foil Brands: Phantom, Loke, Exploder, NeilPryde, Boss and Starboard Iqfoil.
