Nacra F20 vs AC45

Video frame. Check the vid filmed by The5More here

Macca told me the other day he was at Auckland setting up an F20 Carbon for the AC guys, I was waiting for his report to publish something, but he must be really busy showing off his ‘baby’ against the AC45.
Short but nice sequence of the F20 keeping the pace with the 45.

Get that F20 a wing and make it race against Eaton´s C-Class…

It didn't seem to be that much difference in speed, maybe 1 knot?

What kind of boat did the AC45 race against at the end of the video?

Well it keeps up for 14 seconds, if that counts……

The AC 45 is actually pulling away noticably (a little faster and a little higher), but the Nacra F20 carbon is plenty fast, easier to right, easier to transport and only needs one guy to raise the main sail. And you could buy 25 Nacra F20's for the price of an AC 45.

The Nacra was left dead. Only a FIGJAM would even consider saying something else.

Of course the ac45 is faster..duh. But the carbon20 is one hell of a ride. Nothing else out there compares.

I don't think the F20carbon needs a wing to beat the C. Hopefully we will have a showdown at the OK corral (outer harbour in toronto) this summer if Fred isn't too busy.

Get serious! The new AC45 has just made the Extreme 40 tame. The F20 should not be mentioned in the same sentence as the AC45 or C class. No comparison! F20 "Carbon" yeah right it's 10kg heavier than the Tornado and I'm sure with half the lifespan. it has some performance cause it's 3.5m wide. No technology there.

    mwaah,

The F20 carbon is nice boat ,yeah off course you can't compare it to an AC 45 , but the performance is great for a weekend sailor who does use the boat 20 X a year.
the simple vinylester-carbon-foam -alumnium beams building method is not as durable as Marstrom T, but wtf, the price is right.

The 20 is an Epoxy boat, its always funny to see those comments come from people who know nothing about the reality… Its lighter than a Tornado, the torsional hull stiffness is greather than a Marstrom T and the mast is lighter and much larger. Its 3.2m wide not 3.5 like the M20's are now.

If you compare the performance of a T and the F20 there is a very considerable gap, The F20 is a very quick boat and the only ones to say otherwise are those who have not even seen one!

Sure its slower than an AC45, you would be seriously concerned if the 20 rolled the 45!!

The Tornado is officially HISTORY. It had a great run but the F20c rules the beach now mate.

The F20 would beat a C Class cat in almost all real world sailing conditions. The C is a little faster upwind on flat water (more because it is 25 feet long and 14 feet wide than because of the wing), but in anything rough, the F20 would win.

Downwind there is no contest. More hull volume, curved boards and a gennaker make the F20 much faster than a C.

The C class uses a wing mainly to induce camber for downwind performance since class rules allow only 300 square feet of sail area. But downwind performace could be improved a lot more simply by adding a gennaker.

As for technology, the F20 has curved boards–something that the AC45 and most C class cats do not have. Curved boards represent a much bigger leap forward in performance than wings.

considering that its in the wind shadow of a boat thats more than twice its size, i'd say the 20 is performing admirably! anotehr ac45 in the same spot would likely drop back just as fast. if i could afford one, i'd have one(either one!) Great blog too!

Have a Nacra "F20" with banana boards squared off with a C cat? No?
Then shut your pie hole Nacra fanboys. It is all hot air you are throwing out here.

As far as I remember banana boards have been usd on C cats. Were no big game changer.

    Carbon hulls. Ok. So what?

Better torsional hull stiffness than a Tornado. So ?

Obviously somebody are buying the Nacra hype and taking this way too seriously. Consider the lack of facts, the persons involved in creating the hype and the marketing machine is obviously succeeding.

Actually yes the F20c has "squared off" against a C and it wasn't pretty for the C on that particular day.

I suppose you're referring to Invictus at the Weston Cat Open last November. Here's the link, and the photos are a remarkable illustration of different pointing ability !
