“Today, Hervey Bay Sailing Club, on the Fraser Coast in Queensland, will host the final day of what has turned out to be an exceptional 2016 Australian Hobie Cat® Nationals regatta. The duel series, event, started on December 27 and will culminate today with the crowning of the Hobie 16 Open and Masters Australian Champions. The weather for today’s racing is partly cloudy, the temperature at 6am is already 24 degrees Celsius and will climb to a pleasant 28 degrees by around 2:30pm. Continued sun protection is highly recommended with an extreme UV rating. There is little chance of any rain through racing but the humidity will climb to 86%.

A fair, light wind is already blowing from the southeast at around 8 knots and should pick up to 11 knots by the start of racing and build further to 15 knots by the middle of the day. The mid strength winds should allow for a full day of scheduled races to be completed to decide the national championship.

As we go into day four it is looking likely that the national title will be fought out by two Western Australian teams, with Cam Owen and Suz Ghent in the lead with an aggregate score of 17pts and Darren Smith and Josie Mark just two points behind on 19pts.
Peter Bates and Juliet Bates (Qld) on 32pts, sitting in third position, will have a battle on their hands to hold their place with Andrew Keag and Helen Warneke (Qld) 32pts, Mick Butler and Bonnie Butler (NSW) 38pts and Phil Epps and Caitlyn Epps (WA) 39pts, all close enough to make the race for third place a tight contest.

What a great way to finish an awesome regatta.”
