Young Americas Cup: Flying Dutchies

With that team name and seeing the actual members, there was not much to add to the title. If the French teams already had some talent and now they even have joined both groups,  these Dutch youths have some pedigree on the big leagues. Among other titles Thijs Visser is F18 World Champ and Charlie Begemann was crowned Vice F18 Champ at LA weeks ago. Combined with some teen talents like Jolbert van Dijk plus the rest of the team, that include some 49er sailors I think they are forming a nice diversified group.

We met in LA for the F18 Worlds and we made a recorded interview. They seem very focused, beyond their sailing abilities they gathered a very professional scheduled plan. People like Darren Bundock, Carolijn Brouwer and Pim Nieuwenhuis are giving them some key support too.
They will be on the Youth finals.... in some years we might see them on the LV too.

US Sailing would like to remind all the competitors that the US Multihull Championship is open to any sailor.  They have changed to an open format, in part to increase the level of competition at this event but also to make it more accessible. While only an American citizen or permanent resident can win the title, anyone can win the championship itself.  It will take place  November 15-18, 2012 at Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, Pensacola Beach , FL  in F16s.

Olympic Cat Rio 2016: Nacra 17 Test by Silvia Sicouri & Lamberto Cesari

A truly professional made review that Silvia and Lamberto made for Saily.it and Vela e Motore.
With the T out of the race, I was glad we had some new toys to choose from. Going from and idea/cad to win a selection event in such a short time is quite an achievement for Nacra & Morrelli & Melvin.

Seeing in this video how sensitive the boat is, on being so light but with the powerfull F18 platform/rig as a starting base plus carbon mast and curved daggers, confirms what I thought when I knew, and later wrote, about the project before the trials.

Olympic sailors will have to master this new N17, and although it may be overpowered on the lift generated by those extra long curved daggers, it is actually a good challenge for the sailors dedicating the next 4 years of their lives racing it.

Specific fine tuning/trim will be key beyond raw racing talent. Get your N17 asap if you are willing to campaign for Rio.Next an interview with Gunnar recorded at Long Beach on the status of the new Olympic cat.

Thanks to Lamberto for sharing this valuable video.

Tornado Worlds 2012 for Paschalidis & Trigonis

2012 Tornado World Championships - By Andrew Dowley. Paschalidis and Trigonis take the title for the 2nd year.

The final day of the 2012 Tornado World Championships saw some awkward racing in light and fluky winds. Many of the sailors had their discard race and places changed dramatically.

Pending Work

I had a great time at LA, thank all for the good vibes. I tried to enjoy the event to the max, so I wasn´t in full CSN mode and maybe left some pending interviews, but will do them by skype/mail as with wonder boys Taylor&Matthew. Those others looking for me got their interviews recorded. I had pending recs for Soldano/Dave Ullman, the Flying Dutchies AC45 team and Gunnar on the new Nacra 17.
Also had a short but interesting design talk with Mike Drummond (ex Oracle Design Team) at Long Beach, he was racing with his son,  I will have an interview with him soon too on the AC72 and his projects. Mike will be present the A Worlds too.

Now the Tornado Worlds are taking place, more info later. Main event coming is the A-Class Worlds at Isla Morada on October 19-27. The AC45s will be racing again at SF.
Lamberto Cesari made an excellent video for Saily.it on the new Olympic boat, will publish on monday.

The Open Project still going, and I have lots of feedback for the group.
As I'm putting lots of hours on the site and the idea is to continue traveling and covering more events. I want to thank the brands and companies supporting Catsailingnews, as with their help I can invest more time on providing all the info available in the multihull World.

As you all know, you don´t need to have an ad to be featured in CSN, you just send your info and it will be published for sure, it may just take a little on the amount I'm getting every day.
Also thanks to the photographers like Jasper, Jeremy and all those linked permanently in the right column for being a key part of this web.

F18 Worlds final wrap up next week as I have some addtional people to thank like the Glasers.

AC34: Oracle AC72 Back on Track

Press Release: Oracleteamusa.com
...“We continued the commissioning process of our AC72,” said Grant Simmer, general manager. “It was only our second day on the water, so we were focusing on loading the boat slowly to make sure there are no structural issues. We sailed with the Code Zero and the Gennaker for the first time, and we were checking all of the systems.

“It went well,” Simmer said. “We went out a little bit jury rigged, but it was still a valuable day for us. As we’re limited to 30 days of sailing between now and February 1, we want to get as much out of each day on the water as we can.”

F18 Worlds 2012: Backes&Vandame Champs

This was one of the most competitive Worlds ever, confirmed by many and also by just looking at the results and the level of the top 30.  event. When you have Bundock.Van Leeuwen on a 7th overall you know about the level of the fleet. Olivier Backes grabs his 2nd F18 title after Erquy 2010, this time with Mathiew Vandame.

My bets for this year were: Caroliljn-Wouter , that led the event but fell down. Then Oskar Zeekant & Karel Begemann that were 2nd on a speedy C2 and the Dark Horses Styles-Sighs, were the fastest of the fleet on their Phantom (this said by one of their close competitors) but have some bad luck with a daggerboard damaging the dagger case. Just a pity for Hugh, after being hit at Erquy, but I hope with Alan they continue to race together.

Saying that Olivier or Bundy were going to be champs was easy so I always look to some guys performing in previous events. Oskar and Charlie proved me right again, although this time I missed the Champion.
Also the ones 'surprising' were Besson-Lagarrigue, just for racing on a lent standard Infusion picked up at the

Great event at Long Beach hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yatch Club. Will make a more complete wrap up later on the week.

F18 Worlds 2012: Day 4, Results

Images by Jasper Van Staveren

http://www.abyc.org/upload/2012_F18_World_Championship3.html

Another great day, and we are counting 4. Only Tuesday was light ,choppy mess. The rest has been just perfect. Best start of the event for us on the second, Champagne sailing, perfect double confortable trapeze conditions, flat water, we were crossing tacks in front with Baeckler on his Cirrus (James is dominating the Silver on having 3 dnc on the gral) , arrived around 5th to the 1st mark, mantain rythm previous to the final short upwind leg where once again we messed up badly, and ended 24.
Today they changed our tracker, but it seems it didn´t work again... I wanted to review our good moments at least! In the last race we had some minor issue and we just cruise to finish line.

Learning a lot, specially this outer-inner course with long reachs we rarely sail at home on the F18 , plus how to start on large fleets. Truly a great experience for every F18 sailor to participate at least in 1 Worlds.

Big
crash (heard all over the place)  today that left Jason and Brett out for the day. On top of the Gold things are getting defined but still 3 more to come tomorrow. Images to come, I hope...
