Multihull Olympic Trials: Inflatable Hulls will fit… in a bag

“Container-shipment-highway performance oriented catamaran is needed, please present yourself with it and show us that it will meet the (container) ‘rule box’…. performing on the water is secondary and non critical issue” ….

Although practical requisites that may target more countries involved, selecting an Olympic cat on major requirements based on how it will fit anywhere else but on the water is not serious in my view.

Tornados, F18s and others are being shipped all over the World without an issue, why change that????
How much cheaper is a 20 footer?

-Regarding weights, well I know latest F16s can carry more weight and perform as its being done on the F18. So having a 120-150 weight range should fit the F16, F18 , F20c? or Tornado.

-If current requirements are not mandatory,  the Tornado mixed crews should be allowed to participate on the T, and we need to have a good trial with these 3 major platforms represented and see which fits better to current mandatory mixed sailing.
All disscussions will end on the water with the rotating crews

– There are two cats that comply with current specifications, two 16 feets, one quite old and the other quite new.
On $ acussations: They are always quite funny, any boat selected will have commercial interest behind it, so cut it off with that “probono attitude” , cause no one works building and selling cats for free …it is a damn hard job to build cats and maintain logistics and customer service.

Again, on the water extensive and fair trials with several mixed crews should define which is the best cat for the job.

– What does not seems fair is leaving out the T before the Trials, a decent and honorable closure (if any) should be allowed, the Tornado Mixed crews are convinced on their boat, at least let them participate, no hurt for none… on the 20 foot container, a carbon two part mast and we can chop off  the transom AC45 style, so no problem at all.

Stop arguing nonsense, bring on the Trials and let any interested class or project to participate and show what they have for Mixed crews…. on the water.

I think you are the same guy that complained that I posted 10 top results on the A-Class Italian Nats. As I do will all regattas.

You need to read and comprehend in a better way, to my knowledge there are "Two '''16''' (feet) that comply with two part mast and double trap, spi and can get inside 20 foot container, with 2,59max width and similar weight range.

yes, I am, but you are in error, I complained about the photos, not the list you posted! I think that Falcon Bimare, viper, blades have all the characteristics for transport container 20 feet

  4. Martin says:

That is more than obvious as they are all 16 feet, but not all have/offer two part mast (now at least to my knowledge) and of course everyone is going to build them in the future, lets say … tomorrow!

I'm just describing a fact, don´t get mad, just put your F16 on the Trials, don´t forget the two part mast though!

I doubt anyone is going to do a 2 part mast.. That is just rediculous. It would also mean a lot of work for a sail development program.

  6. Anonymous says:

2 part masts already being offered

  7. Anonymous says:

Two part masts are easily designed, Viper probably has one in design already

Bimare already has this system since 1999, designed by RIBA for Class A mast, I believe that Falcon will take this! will be interesting to see what zone "high medium low" will be applied to this system!

Man, tornado is obsolete, costly and difficult to transport by car. Right decision to take it out.
Infact is not a popular boat; think about laser example

Tornado was cheaper to run over a 4 year Olympic campaign than a 470…. so it was very good value.

And it takes an extra 3 mins to pull it apart or put it together, so again: Its not an issue.

  11. Anonymous says:

err, that was 30 mins extra!

  12. Nahid Gaebler says:

We made a quick analytics and we found out that 80% of the mixed teams in Tornado are above 140kg. I guess its the same in F18. This means the majority of the mixed teams have no chance for the Olympics. ISAF ignores completely the situation we have in mixed sailing today. They ignore actual weight statistics.

Its alright that comercial interest of some sailors inside the ISAF drives the lobby work, but this time they have gone to far. Its alright to go a step forward to the Asians (less than 10% in the 470 class). But kicked the rest of the world out with the 140kg limit is a desaster and shows the technical incompetence of some in the ISAF.

In my opinion it's a good idea to minimize costs and choose a boat which fits into 20ft containers, and the weight limits are absolute usual for a mixed team in f 16.
So stop crying and accept that there will be the chance for younger teams which will fit into the weigth limitations!
A new boat is better than riding the old horses…

The new high quality one design Tornado cost 2000 – 4000€ per year in a 4-year Olympic campaign. Compare to other Olympic baots, its very very cheap. We never know how the quality of an new boat is. If it fails, we end up in a very expensive desaster. Hagara/Steinacher used on Tornado for 3 Olympic Games! This is a record for Olympic meterial. Same way Tornado got ab IOC TV award for the medal race. Who can beat this package?

as we all know how conservative the ISAF works, its important when a new discipline gets introduced the class/ boat who is getting chosen will be ahead of its time, so it can grown along as the world is changing and still be attractive to sailors and public and inspire the next generation. the 49er is a prime example, but even this class propably needs to make way after 2020.
The multihull last its olympic status, primary because how it was ran by the community of the tornado class. Taken this together with the fact how old the design of the tornodo is, (look at the daggerboards for instance)could we please stop talking about the tornado!!
I am sorry for the fam. Gaebler and appreciate their efforts and passion, but its just a waste of time and confusing to the rest of the world.
Most of the arguments are baseless, for instance, how much did hangara/steinacher sail there olympic boat in between the olympics, they propably had more tornado's, not?
