New F18 Design: BCM Cirrus "R"

All Images Pierrick Contin. Above and left some pics of the new Cirrus 'R' , the new Boulgne Concepton Marine F18.
Manu Boulogne was crowned World Champ in 2003 with his brother racing their own design, the BCM Cirrus F18. An early concept on designs with added volume, a trend that was finally adopted by the latest wave piercers from AHPC, Nacra and Hobie.

In fact when I was designing my own F18 in July 2005, the Cirrus was the boat I look upto, due to that error margin provided by the high freeboard and bow volume, specially downwind, that gave more room to attack in high winds and chop, a perfect concept for our local conditions.
The Racecat flies downwind, and still has the smoothest ride with the Spi compared with the latest designs I had the opportunity to test in the last months here in Argentina.

This new Cirrus has some extreme features, first check its transom, a full flat tumblehome stern, then a highly pronounced rocker and the most interesting detail of this new F18 design is a 'negative rocker' section line behind the rear beam, I've checked it several times and I have no doubt about that feature, clearly seen in pic #1. I will try to contact Manu for more info.

Equipped with SI sails this new cat is the latest addition to the Formula 18 family, that is breeding new boats every year providing several alternatives for the benefit of catsailors World Wide.

Manhattan
Coordinates: 40°43′42″N 73°59′39″W
Country United States
State New York
County New York County
City New York City
Settled 1624
The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name as Manna-hata, twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River).
The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language.
The area that is now Manhattan was long inhabited by the Lenape Indians. In 1524, some Lenape in canoes met the Florentine Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European explorer to pass New York Harbor, although he may not have entered the harbor past the Narrows.

Can´t get better than this: 360° Video

Be patient and wait for this amazing video to load. You'll be able to change camera angle view while the cameraman is riding along a group of snowboarders, a 360 degree panorama footage. Imagine this kind of video onboard an F18 or other racing cat in a Worlds, and then broadcast live through the net...

Some excellent pics taken by Pro Photographer, Gabriel Palmioli. These are a selection of each boat CDs, I will post more of other boats and the fleet later.
Great championship with some boats missing and perfect conditions for the 3 days.
Cruz Smith and Mariano Heuser riding a Nacra Infusion were the best, dropped mast included that forced them to discard 2 of the last 3 races, but they managed to get back on time for the last race! and grab the title as reported last week.
The champs were followed in the water by Sergio Mehl and Nicolas Aragones with a C2 and a Wildcat!?... they broke C2 spinpole before the last day 1st race and changed to his Wildcat, won 2 of the final races and was 2nd the third for an overall 2nd place on the water, but was disqualified after, for not notifying the race comittee on time about the change.
Esteban Blando and Julio Saubidet with an Infusion were third on the water with an excellent performance and lots of hours less than the top guys on an F18 for Esteban (T sailor) and also not much training with his highly experienced crew, although Julio always seems to tune quite fast, as they didn´t sail together that often and they were flying in the course.
After the disqualification of Sergio Mehl for using two different boats, constant podium visitors, Juan Faustín and Lucas Smith, reached 3rd overall riding an Infusion with a SI spi.
And then you have Opti World and Vice Champ, Agustín Krevisky that needs to get his lazyness with the boat tuning soon, also Ian that couldn´t race with his usual crew when they were peaking in the previous champs, both riding Caps.
The fleet is getting quite competitive, and no one has a secured place any more...
------
I need a fixed crew asap, and with all this Mixed crew Olympic inertia I think I'll start sailing with my wife again, we learned together to sail cats in Mexico with the local H16 fleet in 2002.

Alinghi: "Impossible to participate in AC 34th"

Photo: Guido Trombetta / Alinghi
I was expecting for a full comeback by Alinghi, they are very well positioned for the next Cup in cats. Bertarelli should reconsider and set course to race BOR again for the Cat Cup glory.

------
www.alinghi.com
Alinghi, two times winner of the America’s Cup, has today announced that it will not enter a team in the 34th edition of the prestigious sailing trophy and instead has launched a new programme that will see the Swiss team participating in the Extreme Sailing Series.

After a careful evaluation of the protocol and other initiatives taken by the American Defender and its Challenger of Record, Alinghi considers that the existing conditions make it impossible for the team to participate in the 34th America’s Cup.

Alinghi remains interested in the America’s Cup and will be closely following its developments in the coming months but for the immediate future it will concentrate its efforts in other world class challenges. The Extreme Sailing Series, a championship raced with 40-feet catamarans that is expanding geographically and commercially in 2011 whilst maintaining a truly level playfield and exciting competition, provides the perfect ground for Alinghi to develop its international sailing activity"

Excellent data for the blog's 1001 post.
Cats are back in Rio (pending final confirm on 2011) and the first AC45 hull is on its way.
-> Check transom and back beam position, already differs (at least at this stage) from published render.
Also look Alinghi's D35 for comparison in that area here
