SYZ Foiler: Back to boatyard

Photo: Loris von Siebenthal
SYZ media release: Geneva, 27 May 2009
"Since her maiden flight at the beginning of April, the
SYZ & CO hydrofoil catamaran went through an intensive
training campaign that has permitted to validate her
capacity to fly and has demonstrated the boat’s huge speed
potential. At the end of this first test phase, the project team
has identified, together with the architects and engineers,
several possible alterations to improve her performance and
has decided to take the boat out of the water in order to
optimize it in time for the record season."

Fast Cat Race 2009

Fast Cat Race 2009 sponsored by Tek Kat - Preview by Simon Northrop

This year’s edition of the fast cat race is shaping up to be a corker, racing starts on Friday with three round the cans races in the Solent and one can expect these to be fiercely contested by the F18s and Spitfires for the Handicap win.

Saturday is the day of the big one as the fleet will Endeavour to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight some 50 nautical miles in all and with many different challenges to overcome the race is anyone’s for the taking.

This year the big guns are out in force and favorite for line honors if the breeze is light has to be the new M20 Vampire of Will Sunnucks and Simon Farren, fresh from a debut line honors raid victory at carnac earlier this month this lightweight, 12 feet wide, all carbon monster will take some beating but it is not without competition as if the wind is moderate the Tek Kat of Jim Munday will be pushing for the spoils and if its windy no one would rule out a well sailed Tornado to challenge for the crown.

For the overall win this would be a very tough one to call but favorites would include the new F18 designs of the Shockwave from Loday White and the New Hobie Wildcat, with the Trusty Nacras and Capricorns more than capable of winning as would the Spitfires and Sproatfire from the smaller 16 foot fleet.

Sunday the regatta will be concluded by 3 more round the cans races in the Solent and prizes awarded for the 3 days races. With reduced entry fee of just £95.00 for the whole event and a good forecast for the weekend theres still time to enter so for more information check out www.tek-kat.co.uk/fastcatrace/index.html

New 20HT from Scheurer Design

I received a mail with these renders from a new Scheurer 20 feet HT cat-
Check bow rails Wildcat style... And also transom rails and flat sections, that is the trend now, to merge LodayWhite front and back style rails (they did it on the Spitfire, Dart 16 and latest Shockwave) as I did in 2007 with RC 16 with added channels and now with the RC F18 II to be built soon.

Someone was looking for a new 20 feet cat?... The new Beaver 20ht is just a design concept. 10 boats are needed to build it, 2 signed already: Contact Scheurer Design for more info.

Aggressive bows and curved daggers derived from their own ScheurerA-Class and 120kg??? Will race against the M20 on the Texel for line honours???

WingFox: The New A-Class from Poland

Rudder System

At Carnac we had the official debut of the Exploder F18 from Poland.
Now this prolific country gives us a new A-Class: The WingFox
Wave piercing design of course but with full bows as I like, canted daggers and a fine simple rudder system, plus some Landy and Ashby sails that completes this new A-Class package, at least at first glance looks really nice. Full carbon construction too.

Watch out for this "3rd World" sailing team, add Juan K as designer and Santiago Lange and you'd better train hard Oracle and Alinghi for next 34 Americas Cup, as 33rd is going to be a Match Race in Multihulls... but hey, maybe we'll build a 90' foot for February 10th also ; )

Ishares Cup 2009: Venice Final Day

From iSharesCup.com:
- After 17 races completed Gitana Extreme - Groupe LCF Rothschild wins the iShares Cup Venice event - BMW ORACLE Racing finish second, Renaissance (Oman Sail) third - Light winds, heavy tension - Fantastic show with boats flying hulls just metres away from the race village

In details:
Great starts, impressive speed and flawless manoeuvres allowed Yann Guichard's crew to shine on the racecourse since Day 1 at the iShares Cup Venice, taking the lead yesterday after 10 races... Winning the first one today, the French team proved omnipresent in the leading group, making very few mistakes and gradually capitalising on points to move closer to final victory after each race. The wind direction today forced the Race Committee to set-up oblong courses leaving few tactical options to the skippers, and more than ever winning the first mark was key - any hesitation or imperfect placement on the startline was immediately sanctioned by a costly result. Show-wise, it was absolutely perfect with the boats coming under gennaker, flying a hull, just metres away from the race village!

F18 Italy class father, Pierre Sicouri, passed away

Pierre and his son Raphael sailed together in the F18 class, they won the 2005 italian F18 championship
------

Dear friends, dear sailors,

It is with deep regret that I inform you that our great
friend and companion of races Pierre Sicourì left us.
Pierre passed away this morning at 5, in Milan, after a long
illness against which he fought tenaciously while continuing
sailing on his loved F18 till the last minute.

We all know what Pierre has done for our class... his
Formula 18 Class in Italy!
Yes, his Formula18 because this class in Italy, as it is
today, is the result of Pierre's energy and push to make it
growing in the direction of the joy and desire to sail
together with a group of friends... the Magic Formula as
Pierre like to call it.

What we know of Pierre is just the tip of the iceberg of a
life fully lived by the sea, mountains and with thousand
other emotions, without losing any single moment.

On behalf of the whole Italian class, I want to convey a
strong sense of closeness to his wife Paola, his son
Raphael, his daughters Silvia and Lara that we all know as
always strongly close to Pierre and to his meaning of life.

Pierre, we miss you so much and we will always see you on
the starting line of all our future regattas!

President Italian Formula 18 Class Association
